Spectacular Natural Colours in Granite Products

One of the most extraordinary characteristics of granite is the range of colours which occur naturally. Blacks and greys would be the colours that normally come to mind when we think of granite. Would you have thought of pink or blue or red? Would you have thought of brown or green?

Natural Granite in 8 Different Colours

The Many Colours of Narural Granite

Granite is formed under ground when molten lava cools. During the cooling, mineral crystals form, many of which are visible to the naked eye. This is one of the things which is responsible for the naturally rough texture. It is also one of the causes of the spectacular range of natural colours.

Whether you are putting a counter top in your kitchen, tiling your bathroom or paving your garden, you shouldn’t forget that colour is a major consideration!

Kerbing With Railway Sleepers

Railway Sleepers used for Kerbing

Kerbing with Used Sleepers

Used railway sleepers are perfect for all types of garden kerbing. They can be used to make an edging for grass as in this photograph, line a path or act as a surround for a flower bed. Their durability and natural look make them an ideal choice.

They are thick enough to be raised a little so that they can prevent gravel or woodchip from escaping and they are wide enough to be stepped on safely and easily. They do not need to be treated against rain and yet you have the advantage of the way natural wood blends in.

Our sleepers do not contain creosote so they are safe to use as kerbing for beds where you are growing vegetables.

If you have photos of recycled sleepers being used in your garden please send them to us and we will feature them in our blog.

Build a path with old railway sleepers

We are planning a series of posts on ideas for using architectural salvage materials in landscaping.  We will be suggesting lots of ideas of our own and looking for readers and customers to share their ideas with us.  We would love to feature your house or garden on our blog, showing classic and creative uses of recycled architectural salvage.

We are starting off with one of the great uses for reclaimed railway sleepers.

Garden steps made with old railway sleepers

Railway Sleeper Garden Steps

Railway sleepers have many uses which take advantage of the fact that they are extremely durable.  They do not need to be treated in any way in order to be weather proof.  They will last for years and years.  Our sleepers, by the way, do not contain creosote.  They are uniform in size so if you are building a path, wall or steps and the standard size of a railway sleeper is suitable to the space then there is no more measuring to be done.  You will not need special foundations making building relatively easy.  It should be said that sleepers are not light, but that is one of their great advantages.

If you are looking to build a path or steps which will be easy to maintain, be comfortable and safe to use and will immediately blend into their environment, then recycled railway sleepers is one of the best options.

Enhance your Landscape with Timber Beams

It is hard to imagine a more characteristic building material than old timber beams.  Much has been written about the role of Oak in Naval history and where would pre-concrete architecture be without the strength and flexibility of timber beams?  These days the choice of timber beams is an aesthetic one and they show no signs of going away.  The human love affair with wood is eternal.

Existing wooden beams can be used again and again.  Recycling can and does contribute to conservation.  Better still, breathing new life into old wood achieves a style that cannot be faked.

Here are two brilliant examples.  Interestingly they are both in pitched pine, one in a raw state and one waxed and pollished.  Both beams are clearly marked by age.  As ever with wood, this merely enhances its beauty.

Pitched Pine Timber Beam Bench

Landmark provided this bench and the reclaimed York stone (Sandstone) it is resting on.  It is rewarding to see salvaged products used so stylishly and effectively in wonderful surroundings like Lyons Estate in Newcastle.

The stresses and strains of a long, hard life show on this pollished support beam at Lawlors Hotel in Naas.

Perhaps it is the mood I am in today, but surely this is not just about looks.  There is something about wood that affects the emotions.  Like seeing a picture of a familiar place from a hundred years ago and there are the same trees you know today looking as if they have already lived two hundred more.

A tale of 4 Used Brick Barbeques

We have been talking about great uses for recycled and reclaimed brick because we have a special offer on at the moment and because we have been coming across wonderfully imaginative ideas created by some of our customers.  In this post you can see four barbeques built in recycled brick and other salvaged products.  If you are looking for ideas these may well stimulate a solution suitable to your garden and your budget.

The first is the most simple:

Simple reclaimed brick BBQ

Simple BBQ in Recycled Red Brick

Very easy to build and perfectly practical.  There is no lack of beauty or elegance in the simplicity of this design, in fact on the contrary it looks very good indeed and many will prefer it to some of the more elaborate designs to follow.  It is a perfect example of why used brick is perfect for this kind of project.  Once the brickwork is done there is no need for any more finishing.  Once the grouting has weathered in a little it will look as if it has been there for years.  It will be a good idea to take note of the prevailing wind when choosing where to put your BBQ so that the charcoal will be well ventilated and the smoke will hopefully blow away from the person cooking.  For this design all you need is a cooking grid and a tray for burning the charcoal.  I would want to have an outdoor sink nearby, perhaps a Belfast sink to go with your Belfast brick!

Now let’s look at the luxury end.  Pretty much an outdoor fitted kitchen:

Used-Brick-BBQ-with-Limestone-counter-top

Used Brick BBQ with Limestone counter top

A cast iron oven and gas barbeque are included in this design but the sky is the limit.  You could have both gas and open BBQ, perhaps a brick oven, room for an ice box or fridge and so on.  It all depends on space and budget.  The use of natural stone could be extended to include granite paving, Indian sandstone or limestone paving to match the counter top.  All making for a luxurious, natural looking and durable outdoor kitchen.

Reclaimed Brick BBQ with Chimney

Reclaimed Brick BBQ with Chimney

Back to a more simple design now but with an arch and chimney.  Definitely requires more skill to make and I would need some help with this one but in cramped spaces or windy areas the chimney is a great help.

Have a look at this one if you like to know your fridge is well stocked with beer:

Double BBQ in used brick with well stocked fridge!

Double BBQ in used brick with well stocked fridge!

Good use of space here in what I imagine is a reasonably small garden.  This is a person who likes to party.  There are two cooking stations and the all important fridge.  An optimist’s BBQ!  Ready to go as soon as the weather allows.  Brick surrounds and natural stone paving help it all to blend in.

If you have built your own barbeque in salvaged materials please send us some photos so that we can inspire our readers with your ideas.

Reclaimed Belfast Bricks – Special Offer

There are many towns in Ireland and particularly in Northern Ireland which use red brick for building houses but none more so than Belfast.  Brickwork is an unmissable characteristic of Belfast and gives the houses in the city a distinctive style.  One of the great attributes of brick is that as it wears in it takes on a variety of colours.  These colours blend with each other and at the same time provide contrast.  The buildings become more individual, more ‘hand made’.  The effect is similar to the beauty taken on by wooden furniture as it ages.  Sometimes the colour can be striking as in this picture of ‘orange’ bricks:

Recycled, Reclaimed Belfast Brick

Pallett of Belfast Bricks

Recycled Belfast bricks are perfect for repairing and restoring old walls and buildings.  They are already worn in and will blend with existing brick-work:

They are ideal for fireplaces, door arches, garden walls and many other projects such as building your own BBQ:

We are providing reclaimed Belfast brick at the reduced price of €320 for a pallett as a special offer to help to entice you to take on that project in your garden this spring.

Cast Iron Table and Chairs for your Garden – Special Offer

We are coming up to the time of year when you might be pouncing on opportunities to sit outside, have a BBQ or eat your evening meal in the garden.  I don’t need to tell anyone how unpredictable the Irish weather is.  One thing, though, that is common enough to be worth preparing for is that some of our best weather regulary comes in the early spring and autumn.  With that in mind, it would be a shame to miss out on days when, but for the lack of garden furniture, you would have considered eating outside.

cast iron table and chairs

Cast iron table and 4 chairs: €400

Landmark is running a special offer on this set of cast iron table and four chairs.  They comes in white but are very easy to paint if you prefer another colour.  Apart from being stylish and elegant, they are hardy enough to be left outside throughout the year without special treatment.  Our offer of €400 for the set is great value.  Of course you can buy plastic at lower cost but with a massive loss of style and looks.  Wood can compete on the class front but must be stored indoors or treated regulary or else the weather will destroy it in a matter of a year or so.  If you want to add some class to your garden at a very reasonable price have a look at this and our other cast iron garden furniture.

Landmark Architectural Blog

Much of the business of Architectural Salvage is done on the phone, answering questions and discussing projects.  Many people know a lot about what is out there and are looking for detailed information.  Some just know they want recycled materials for style or conservation reasons and need to know how to make use of what is available.  Of course we hope that our website will help to answer questions but there is always more to say.

So, welcome to Landmark Architectural’s new blog!

We intend to use the blog to add detail to what you can find out on our website.  We will answer questions which regularly come up in those phone conversations.  We will discuss projects, uses of salvaged materials, traditional, creative, unusual and downright odd.  We will be very happy to hear from you about ideas you have come up with or come across and we hope that we can publish material that will inspire the use of architectural salvage in gardens and homes around the country.

Next week I plan to write about a variety of ways to use railway sleepers in landscaping.  Here is a taster:

Railway Sleepers used as garden steps

Railway Sleeper Steps

These steps, built with reclaimed railway sleepers, prove that it is possible to blend in and stand out all at the same time.

Of course we will also keep you up to date with great deals and special offers.
